This essay contains three parts: first, a Historical Outline, in which we have tried to give a resumé of the most important events which have occurred in the life of this country. Second, The Land, which is a description of the main features of the different regions of Brazil. (...) The essay ends with a brief section entitled Postcript, which sums up the probable conclusions of an observer after a sojourn in this fascinating country.
