Two Brazilian capitals : architecture and urbanism in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília

The study contained in this book was partly inspired by previous research on the planning of Chandigarh in India. Through that work I developed an interest in the design of new towns, in problems of urbanization in developing countries, and in the nature and symbolic function of capital cities. The scope of the present work involves a consideration of modern architecture and urban design in Brazil seen in terms of the old capital of Rio de Janeiro and the new capital of Brasilia. The rami-fications of urbanism are wide, and any study involving cities will inevitably touch on matters relating to economics, sociology, and politics. The focus of this investiga-tion, however, is on physical design, and it deals primarily with those aspects of the man-made environment which are still considered, for lack of a better definition, art. – NORMA EVENSON
